چکیده

Abstract. The feasibility of assimilating sea ice thickness (SIT) observations derived from CryoSat-2 along-track measurements freeboard is successfully demonstrated using a 3D-Var assimilation scheme, NEMOVAR, within the Met Office's global, coupled ocean–sea-ice model, Forecast Ocean Assimilation Model (FOAM). Arctic are produced by Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM) converted to SIT FOAM modelled snow depth. This first time have been used in this way, with other centres gridded temporally averaged observations. leads improvements analysis forecast fields generated FOAM, particularly Canadian Arctic. CryoSat-2 estimates of Arctic sea ice thickness and volume

[1] Satellite records show a decline in ice extent over more than three decades, with a record minimum in September 2012. Results from the Pan-Arctic Ice-Ocean Modelling and Assimilation system (PIOMAS) suggest that the decline in extent has been accompanied by a decline in volume, but this has not been confirmed by data. Using new data from the European Space Agency CryoSat-2 (CS-2) mission, v...

Assimilation of Ice Concentration in an Ice–Ocean Model

Ice concentration is a critical parameter of the polar marine environment because of the large effect sea ice has on the surface albedo and heat exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean. Simulations of the energy exchange processes in models would benefit if the ice concentration were represented more accurately. Reanalysis simulations that use historical wind and temperature fields may de...

Comparison of Arctic Sea Ice Thickness from Satellites, Aircraft, and PIOMAS Data

In this study, six Arctic sea ice thickness products are compared: the AVHRR Polar Pathfinder-extended (APP-x), ICESat, CryoSat-2, SMOS, NASA IceBridge aircraft flights, and the Pan-Arctic Ice Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System (PIOMAS). The satellite products are based on three different retrieval methods: an energy budget approach, measurements of ice freeboard, and the relationship betwe...

An assessment of sea ice thickness calculated from AMSR-E and MODIS for operational data assimilation

In this paper, sea ice thickness values are calculated for a region along the east coast of Canada using data from two sensors representative of those available for operational data assimilation. Data from the first sensor, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), is used to calculate the ice thickness using a heat balance equation. Relationships between the MODIS ice thicknes...

Assimilation of ocean colour data into a Biogeochemical Flux Model of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea

An advanced multivariate sequential data assimilation system has been implemented within the framework of the European MFSTEP project to fit a three-dimensional biogeochemical model of the Eastern Mediterranean to satellite chlorophyll data from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-ofview Sensor (SeaWiFS). The physics are described by the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) while the biochemistry of the ecosyste...
